Microneedling: what it can and cannot do

Microneedling may support gradual changes in texture, fine lines or selected scars, but the evidence and response vary. Suitability and aftercare matter.

A professional skin treatment in progress

This article provides general educational information only. It is not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical assessment. Product and treatment suitability varies by person.

Microneedling uses fine sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The repair response that follows may gradually improve the appearance of texture, fine lines and some acne scars. Most facial-rejuvenation studies use a series of sessions, but protocols and outcome measures vary, which makes exact comparisons difficult.

What it may help

The treatment is often considered when surface texture or selected scars are the main concern. Change, when it occurs, is gradual. Photographs taken in consistent lighting and a planned review point are more useful than promising a fixed percentage improvement.

Microneedling cannot remove every scar, replace lost facial volume or diagnose a changing skin lesion. Deep, tethered or raised scars may need medical assessment or a different procedure. Active acne, infection, an open wound or an unexplained rash should be assessed before needling is considered.

Depth is not a badge of quality

Needle depth, number of passes and treatment interval should relate to the area, skin and goal. A more aggressive session can increase recovery and risk without ensuring a better outcome. Home rollers and professional devices are not equivalent in sterility, control or depth.

Expected recovery and risks

Redness, warmth, tightness, tenderness, mild swelling and pinpoint bleeding can occur. Dryness or light flaking may follow. Reported complications include irritation, infection, pigment change, cold-sore reactivation and scarring, although serious events are uncommon in the published literature.

Skin tone, history of pigment change, tendency to scar, medicines and recent procedures all belong in the suitability discussion. Careful sun protection is particularly important while the skin is recovering.

Keep aftercare simple

Follow the instructions provided for the actual device and depth used. Avoid picking or adding several strong products while the barrier feels unsettled. Seek advice if pain, redness or swelling worsens rather than improves, or if you develop blistering, pus, fever or another unexpected symptom.

At London & Glow, Hemel Mandalia provides microneedling following a personalised skincare consultation. This gives you time to discuss your skin goals, recovery and the treatment approach that may suit you.
