About the treatment

A plan shaped around you

Vaginismus can involve involuntary tightening of the pelvic-floor muscles that makes penetration painful or difficult. For suitable patients, prescription medicine can be injected into selected muscles to reduce that tightening for a period of time. Dr Varma will listen to your experience, explain where this treatment may fit within wider care and discuss other helpful support or referrals.

Results

For selected patients, treatment may temporarily reduce involuntary muscle tightening and support progress alongside wider care. Individual response varies.

Recovery

Pain, tenderness, bruising or temporary changes in muscle function can occur. Your individual restrictions, expected onset and follow-up plan will be explained before treatment.

Important to know

  • Pain, bruising, bleeding or infection can occur
  • Temporary weakness may affect nearby muscles or bladder control
  • Improvement may be partial, absent or temporary, and wider pelvic-floor or psychological support may still be important
